Klein was an artist with a keen philosophical mind, yet deeply spiritual. He was an agitateur d'idées, an agitator of ideas who used his considerable charisma to propagate social change through art.
Guided by his studies of the Japanese Kata (the abstract, purely spiritual lines of movement in judo),Rosicrucian cosmogony, and the phenomenological and psychological philosophies that emerged during his lifetime, Klein promoted with his writings and public talks, as with his artistic practice, a vision of absolute artistic and social freedom.
When he theorized about his practice of art, he did so by speculating out of a general culture that includes philosophical, scientific, and political ideas. Yet Klein left two major bodies of writing in which he addressed the predicament of modern art quite explicitly in philosophical terms: "Overcoming the Problematics of Art" was to be his ethics; "The Monochrome Adventure", his aesthetics. Together with the other texts contained in this volume, they form the critical part of his artistic legacy.
